Les Cuisines Solidaires: Turning Surplus into Solidarity
Founded in 2017 by Nicolas Merven, Les Cuisines Solidaires (LCS) was created with a clear mission: to fight both food waste and food insecurity. Supported by the IBL Corporate Centre, and in collaboration with several IBL Group companies and local food sector partners, LCS has become an example of social and environmental commitment in Mauritius.
Every day, 200 to 250 meals are prepared using donated food and surplus produce. These meals are then distributed to families in need through five partner NGOs: Caritas Sainte-Thérèse, Caritas Sainte-Hélène, Bien-Être de la Famille, Lève-Toi et Marche, and I Move.
The strength of Les Cuisines Solidaires lies in a committed network of partners—businesses, NGOs, and individuals—working together to reduce hunger.
LCS focuses on transforming edible but unsellable food (such as imperfect fruits and vegetables or items near expiry) and rescues around 2.5 tonnes of food each month.
Among the 13 dedicated food donors are: IBL Seafood, BrandActiv, Winners, SKC Surat, Panagora, Innodis, Inicia, Edendale, Quality Beverages, Tea Blenders, Moroil, Mayil Spices, Maurilait, as well as a dedicated farmer from La Marie.
Les Cuisines Solidaires in numbers (2024–2025):
- 200 beneficiaries reached through 5 NGOs
- 13 food donors involved
- 3,850 meals distributed each month
- 2.5 tonnes of food saved monthly
